This is how i wowed when i got the shocker i serve here...i dare and deserve your curses and swears!
They have been making all fuss about their being the 'true' representatives of the Indian populace, and thus the constitutional guards! Are they...naaaaa, pops the figures.Ever wondered, who the hell are you in the scheme of things the representatives representing you(in the parliament) plan for your nation...right, your nation, but none of your business! Have stomach...give your iPod some rest, and listen to this gazal...well just listen, even i didn't like it much when i stumbled into it!
Let me start with a small bibliographic kinda introduction: the music to this gazal is copied,in entirety, from the official website of Chief Election Commission(India, GE 2009), unofficially. India has( i won't use have, ever) 716 mn electors, those who can vote. In the General Election 2009, 417mn i.e. 58.2% of the total electors chose to weather the Sun off to handpick, randomly...most of them, those who would piggyback us in the name of 'elected representatives'and drive this nation crazy to the best of their whims and fancies for the next five years. So, they are right up there...and to it!
We have 544 elected members in the Parliament. Out of these, only 42 ie 7.72% have secured 40% or more(of total electors in their respective constituency). 179 ie 32% have somehow managed to lure 31-40% of the electors. And now the bombshell, 323 ie roughly 60% could convince/threaten/beg/etc 30% or less than that...of them, 95(17.4%) couldn't touch even 20% mark( Had it been any of us scoring that much less, we all know what our parents would've done to us...shivers)!!!!!
Here is the next stanza...irshaad. All national parties garnered 265 mn votes(36.9% of the electorate grabbing 376 seats between them)...much less than the population of Uttar Pradesh and Bihar combined! State parties swept their hands on146 seats against 98.4 mn(14.39%) votes they cornered.
Now, the pinch. On an average, an elected MP has pocketed 4 lac votes# to be there to thump the benches, or to sip tea at Re 1 per cup,eat Biryani for Rs 8, munch chicken at Rs 24.50! Our 544 representatives thus have the support of 217 mn ie 17.7% of the total populace! Technically, the so called representatives of the people in our Parliament represent only 1/6 th of the people. You there, literally...chances are 5/6th dark!
Another pinch...it really pinches, hard. The ruling Indian National Congress is riding on the shoulders of 119 mn voters it could huddle in...9.75% of the total Indians and 16.61% of the total electors! Wait, worst is yet to ooze out. Considering they have 206 MPs in the Lok Sabha, these MPs have 82 mn votes to grind on...roughly 11.4% of the electorate and meager 6.7% of the total population!! Though we know who rule
the roost, but still if you try to play ideal here...even then, representatives of 109 mn(273 into 4 lacs) ie 15.09% of the electorate, and 8.95 % of the total population, decide the fate of 1220 mn Indians!A motley of thickskins representing a figure equivalent to the Delhi Metro commuters of 8 days so audaciously claim to be the only representative body while disclaiming everybody else unconstitutional! Theater of the extreme absurd!Clap...the dear and mute spectator!
All this seemingly jiggery -pokery is, unfortunately, the most honest interpretation of how the great Indian democracy works, or let it worked in the hands of the tiniest minority clamouring to be the biggest and tallest of them all!
# On an average an elected MP in the 15th ie the current Lok Sabha has secured 4,00,000 votes. Like, winning BJP candidate from Andaman & Nicobar got 75,211 votes only, while Inder Singh Namdhari( Chatra contituency) got 1,08336 votes. Suvendhu Adhikari(Tamluk) of AITC secured 6,37,644 votes.
All figures are taken from CEC website and other authentic sources, and are true to the best of my efforts.
